Morgan “RepulseGod” Bamford, a former Fortnite competitor from Australia, faced disqualification from the Fortnite Champion Series event in Copenhagen in 2023 after it was revealed that he had shared his account with another player to qualify for the event. Bamford (or rather, the individual using his account) and his teammate, Jace, secured first place in a qualifying event in August, earning a spot in the $4 million Global Championship. However, Epic Games soon discovered the account-sharing violation.
In 2024, Epic Games took a strong stance against cheating, announcing that it would intensify legal actions against both cheaters and those selling cheating software. The company revealed that it had filed legal action against Bamford, resulting in a permanent ban from Fortnite tournaments for the player. Part of the settlement required Bamford to forfeit the prize money he had earned, which would be donated to the Child’s Play charity. Epic Games chose not to disclose further details of the settlement, including any additional financial obligations Bamford might face beyond the prize money.
Additionally, Bamford was compelled to post an apology video on his YouTube channel, where he admitted to violating Epic’s rules. “I shared my Epic Games account with another user, Forbes, to qualify for the 2023 Fortnite Championship Grand Finals. My actions violated Epic’s rules, and I was disqualified from the tournament,” Bamford explained in the video. “Epic took legal action against me, and now I’m banned from participating in Fortnite tournaments forever. I also have to pay a monetary settlement, which includes the prize money I received but did not win fairly, and Epic will donate it to charity. Cheating in tournaments ruins the fun for players who earned their spot, and I apologize to the Fortnite community for my actions. I won’t ever cheat in Fortnite again.”
Bamford and Jace had won $20,000 in prize money from the qualifying event. Throughout his career, Bamford had earned significant prize money from Fortnite tournaments. However, in 2020, he had been one of the players who accused Epic Games of failing to pay out prize money from a DreamHack event after placing fourth in a solo competition and winning $12,500.
Epic Games has also taken legal action against another Fortnite esports competitor, Sebastian “Sabortian” Araujo, filing a lawsuit in December. Araujo, who used cheating software and hardware, had competed in lower-level events over the years and earned thousands of dollars in prize money. His case is still ongoing, with the lawsuit served on February 9, according to court documents obtained by Polygon.
Epic Games has filed over a dozen similar lawsuits, both domestically and internationally, in its effort to combat cheating within the Fortnite community.
