From my point of view, all the factors commented on this first unit are key causing mixed-ability. I really think that motivation is one of the main factors. I believe that languages can be difficult for you, but if you are motivated and you want to learn them, you will. Related to that, I think that your personality also has a lot to do with that. I usually find open students much more successful in speaking than shy students. Those students whose level is low but are cheerful and warm usually give it a chance and try to speak and are better than those who are shy. Your attitude towards the language and your thoughts about it will also be important. Then, aptitude comes. If you are not very motivated, but you are good at languages, you will succeed. Some people are born with this inner capacity of being good at something. Previous exposure almost comes at the end. I think that some students have studied English for ages but they do not cause mixed-ability because they were not motivated, they did not pay attention and they do not know what the teacher talks about. Finally, I think that learning style is the least important cause of these 6.
